I rarely read Automotive News but when it came in today’s mail I started flipping through it.
Buried at the bottom of page 34 there was an interesting article stating that consultants at I.H.S Automotive estimated that Volkswagen would outsell Toyota globally by 2014. Last year’s worldwide VW group sales were 9.3 million versus Toyotas sales of 9.7 million. Toyota production was 9.9 million. The article suggested that VW will pass Toyota production and sales by 2014.
The increase will come from North American production according to I.H.S. My opinion is that they’re overlooking the fact that Toyota doesn’t like to lose. Toyota will get more aggressive than VW, at least in North America, when it comes to vehicle incentives.
Regardless of the outcome – it is interesting to see and watch this unfold.
